Narrow-band ultraviolet B treatment increases vitamin D levels in psoriasis and atopic dermatitis patients

 
 

A Finnish study in 36 adult patients with psoriasis (n = 18) or atopic dermatitis (AD; n = 18) evaluated the effects of narrow-band ultraviolet B (NB-UVB) on serum calcidiol levels and clinical outcomes. Patients received NB-UVB treatment 3 times/week from January to March. Before treatment, the majority of patients (33/36) had serum calcidiol levels of under 50 nmol/L. Mean levels were 36.8 and 32.2 nmol/L in psoriasis and AD patients, respectively. After therapy, these levels increased to 59.9 and 68.2 nmol/L, respectively.
