Photodynamic Therapy and Diagnosis: Old and New Applications

Summary

The prevalence of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) in the last few years has dramatically increased. Lately, noninvasive methods are becoming staple therapeutic options in the management of NMSC. This article reviews the effectiveness of photodynamic therapy (PDT) with hematoporphyrin derivates (HpD) in the management of both skin cancer and other nononcological diagnoses. Also reviewed is the effectiveness of fluorescence diagnostics in the detection of altered tissue in vivo.
