Prednisolone versus ciclosporin for severe adult eczema: A controlled multicenter study

 
 

An investigator-initiated, double-blind, randomized, multicenter trial compared the efficacy of oral prednisolone (0.5-0.8 mg/kg/day) and oral ciclosporin (2/7-4.0 mg/kg/day) in 38 adults with severe eczema. Prednisolone patients received the drug daily for 2 weeks, followed by placebo for 6 weeks, then entered a 12-week follow-up. Ciclosporin patients received the agent for 6 weeks then entered a 12-week follow-up. Concomitant treatments comprised topical steroids, emollients and antihistamines. The primary endpoint was the percentage of patients with stable remission (50% or greater decrease in the SCORing Atopic Dermatitis [SCORAD] score under active treatment and no flare-up [75% or greater increase of baseline SCORAD) during follow-up.
