Tacrolimus reported more cost-effective than pimecrolimus in children with atopic dermatitis

A 6-week, multicenter, investigator-blinded, randomized study compared the cost-effectiveness of tacrolimus ointment (0.1%) to pimecrolimus cream (1%) in children aged 2-15 years with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis. Results from a Markov cohort model showed that tacrolimus achieved longer relief of atopic dermatitis symptoms (6.5 vs. 3.8 days) and was cheaper (expected costs of $625.74 vs. $647.27 per patient) than pimecrolimus. The authors conclude that tacrolimus (0.1%) is more cost-effective than pimecrolimus in the treatment of pediatric patients with moderate or severe atopic dermatitis [Taneja, C. et al. 33rd Annu Meet Soc Pediatr Dermatol (July 12-15, Chicago) 2007: Abst 23].
