The literature provides limited evidence-based information regarding the management of auto-immune bullous diseases (AIBD) and most guidelines are expert-based consensus documents. The rarity of these mucocutaneous bullous disorders and the limitations inherent in managing affected patients have proved to be significant obstacles, encumbering the publication of any studies which satisfactorily delineate the best evidence-based approaches to management. Still, the literature does provide some guidance in the management of AIBD based on a limited number of randomized, controlled trials, cohort studies, small series and case reports, as well as consensus papers by authorities in the field.
