Treatment of perioral dermatitis with pimecrolimus cream

An open-label study of the efficacy of pimecrolimus cream 1% evaluated its effects on 30 patients (mean age 30 years) with perioral dermatitis. Patients applied topical pimecrolimus cream 1% twice daily for 4-8 weeks and were followed up for 6-18 months post-treatment. A severity score based on 6 parameters (presence of papules, pustules, erythema, dryness, burning sensation and edema) was calculated at baseline and after treatment. The mean severity score before treatment was 7.13 and afterwards it fell significantly to 2.4 (P < 0.0001 vs. baseline). After 6-18 months relapse was only recorded in 2 patients (Adaskevich, P. 10th Int Congr Dermatol (May 20-24, Prague) 2009, 59).
