A nested case-control analysis and follow-up using the UK-based General Practice Research Database compared the incidence rates of newly diagnosed diabetes among patients with or without psoriasis. Incident diabetes was diagnosed in 1,061 of the 65,449 patients enrolled in this study. Compared to patients without psoriasis, the rate of diabetes was higher among those with a history of psoriasis (59%). The risk of developing diabetes was slightly higher among patients with longer psoriasis history who were receiving systemic treatment (adjusted OR: 2.56). However, the investigators found no significant association between high body mass index alone and risk of incident diabetes (Brauchli, Y.B. et al. Br J Dermatol 2008, 159[6]: 1331).
