A 3-month, randomized, investigator-blinded, placebo-controlled study of 31 children and adolescents (aged 6 months-17 years) with moderate to severe atopic dermatitis (AD) was conducted. It investigated whether suppression of Staphylococcus aureus growth by sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) and intermittent intranasal mupirocin could decrease eczema severity. The primary endpoint was the decrease in Eczema Area Severity Index (EASI) score from baseline to endpoint. NaClO baths comprised one-quarter cup of a 6% solution in half a bathtub of water (0.0005% solution) at least twice weekly.
