The prevalence of autoantibodies to tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) in patients with nonsegmented (generalized) vitiligo (n = 79), segmented vitiligo (n = 8) or other autoimmune diseases without vitiligo (n = 91) was investigated. Sera from 28 healthy subjects were also examined. Only patients with nonsegmental vitiligo had autoantibodies to TH, and these were found in 18/79 patients (23%). This prevalence was significantly higher than that seen in controls (P = 0.003). Sixty-four patients had active vitiligo, and TH autoantibody prevalence was significantly higher in these patients compared to those with stable disease (P = 0.0009) (Kemp, E.H. et al. Exptl Dermatol 2010, 20: 35).
