A murine model of atopic dermatitis (AD), the NC/Nga mouse, was used to explore the corneal abnormalities that have been seen in AD patients. Histopathological examination, detection of apoptotic cells and video recordings of eye-scratching were made. Blepharoconjunctivitis in this model was caused by allergic inflammation and in its severest form was associated with a thinning of the corneal epithelium, an irregular epithelial/stromal interface, subepithelial deposition and stromal neovascularization. Eye scratching behavior was reduced by tacrolimus ointment 0.1%, which may be a useful therapeutic approach in the clinic (Ebihara, N. et al. Cornea 2008, 27[8]: 923-929).
