Pathophysiological roles of inducible heme oxygenase in atopic dermatitis

 
 

The pathophysiological role of the inducible antioxidant heme oxygenase (HO-1) and its correlation with the clinical severity of atopic dermatitis (AD) were studied in 100 AD patients and 72 age- and gender-matched controls. A murine model in DS-Nh mice was used to further investigate the localization and function of HO-1. Serum HO-1 levels were significantly higher in AD patients compared with controls (p<0.0001) and were associated with increased AD severity (r=0.49; p<0.0001). Serum HO-1 levels also correlated with serum IgE, lactate dehydrogenase, IL-18 and thymus- and activation-regulated chemokine levels.
