38 - Types of publications
This is the classic structure of a manuscript submitted for publication as an original article. Nevertheless, scientific journals also publish other types of articles. Reviews or editorials are usually written by the Editorial Board or upon request. Letters to the editor are usually answers to or comments on articles previously published and the interval between the date of publication of an original article and the writing of the letter should be short. Case reports are special reports on a patient with an unusual response to a treatment, a meaningful pathological finding, etc. Rapid communications (also called short communications by some journals) are brief original articles with unprecedented and relevant results. Finally, articles may be related to an original work or to a special topic (e.g., techniques and instruments).Journals also publish supplements, which are collections of articles that deal with related issues or topics, often published as a separate issue of the journal or as inserts.
