Professional Development

5 - Definition of CME 2
In layman’s terms, this means that CME consists of activities that teach physicians new information and skills to better care for their patients. The primary objective of CME, therefore, is to improve patient care and benefit patients.CME forms part of the larger CPD --or continuing professional (or physician) development, and some countries or specialty boards tend to use the term CPD instead of CME.There are activities that may not be medically or scientifically based that can be considered CME, such as those that teach certain organizational or other skills and knowledge required in their day-to-day practice, so long as these ultimately help them help their patients. So, a course on reimbursement systems or office and time management can make physicians more efficient at handling their practice and patients, whereas a wine tasting course, for example, does not.
