Triamcinolone and 5-fluorouracil evaluated in keloids and hypertrophic scars

 
 

A 12-week double-blind clinical study was conducted to assess the effectiveness of treating keloids and hypertrophic scars, benign growths of dermal collagen which sometimes lead to physical and psychological problems for patients, with triamcinolone with and without 5-fluorouracil (5-FU). A total of 40 patients were randomized into two groups and were treated weekly with either intralesional triamcinolone acetonide (TAC) alone or with TAC and 5-FU. Erythema, pruritus, pliability height, length and width of lesions were recorded. Both groups improved in almost all parameters, but improvement was more significant (p<0.05 for all but pruritus and itch reduction) when using a combination of TAC plus 5-FU.
