None of the current therapies for pruritus in burn patients are very effective; antihistamines provide relief in approximately 20% of subjects while emollients also have limited efficacy. The current literature on the pathophysiology of itch and its pathways was reviewed and treatment options explored both in itch-associated burns and in other conditions. A treatment algorithm was proposed to stratify possible therapeutic options in this condition (Brooks, J.P. et al. Burns 2008, 34[6]: 751-760).
