Prognostic value of molecular and biochemical tests in stage III melanoma patients

 
 

A Polish study in 255 stage III melanoma patients evaluated multimarker reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) assay and preoperative lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels as prognostic markers. The median follow-up time was 25 months. The multimarker RT-PCR results were positive in 32% of patients. Patients with positive results had a higher recurrence rate (71%) compared to those with negative results (54%; p=0.01). Preoperative LDH was increased in 40.5% of patients with macroscopic, versus 23% of those with microscopic nodal metastases (p=0.003). There were significant differences in overall survival between patients with normal and high preoperative LDH levels (p=0.007).
