Cefuroxime is superior to penicillin in children with perianal dermatitis

A prospective, open, controlled trial compared the efficacy of penicillin versus cefuroxime in pediatric patients aged 1-16 years with signs and symptoms of group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcus pyogenes (GABHS) perianal dermatitis. Patients were randomized to a 7-day course of cefuroxime (n=17) or a 10-day course of penicillin (n=18). The clinical evaluations at 3 days and at the end of treatment showed that cefuroxime was superior to penicillin in achieving a more rapid clinical improvement and bacterial eradication. These results indicate that cefuroxime is more effective than penicillin in children and adolescents with perianal streptococcal dermatitis (Navarini Meury, S. et al. J Pediatr 2008, 153[6]: 799).
