Although each journal has its own format, their structure is basically the same, as defined in 1978 by the Vancouver Group, when a small group of editors of general medical journals met informally in Vancouver, British Columbia.The Vancouver Group has since expanded and become the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), which meets annually. The ICMJE has gradually broadened its guidelines and included ethical principles related to publication in biomedical journals.
